Subject: Konnect Short Circuit

Tom,

Does the Konnect have any short circuit protection? I am wondering the best way to hook up 10 small pneumatic valves. The current seems low enough for me to do a direct connection, however if one of the coils shorts I dont want to have to replace the whole Konnect board. Would I be better off running relays to drive the solenoid valves? I dont know if a relay coil is any less prone to shorting out than a valve coil. The direct wiring would simplify my setup a lot.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

The Konnect Ouputs are not short circuit protected.  Forcing more then 0.25A through any output may damage that output.  The outputs are all opto isolated from each other so only that single output would be damaged.

I don't know the reliability of solenoid vs relay coils.

In either case with any coil a reverse diode should be added across the coil to avoid a big negative voltage spike (spark) when current flow is stopped.

From my 35 years experience with industrial components I have found that relays are much less prone to shorting than valve coils.
I would say probably 100 to 1.  I would normally use an external mechanical relay for this type of hookup but You could use a solid state relay as well. either way it makes repair much easier if something  were to go wrong.
